Case studyRepurpose.io

A platform that scales with demand.

How Repurpose.io moved a fast-growing content automation platform onto containers, managed data and automation on AWS, so it stays available, ships faster and costs less to run.

The challenge

Growth outpaced the platform.

As Repurpose.io’s customer base grew, its legacy infrastructure limited how quickly the team could ship updates and how well the app could scale. It needed a more resilient platform that stayed highly available and secure, with less downtime and more reliable deployments.

The fastest and most affordable way to get an enterprise grade infrastructure setup and running on AWS that you can own and evolve.

What we built

Containers, managed data and automation.

Assembly planned the move with the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework, then rebuilt the platform in phases to avoid disruption: containerised, automated and defined in code.

What we delivered

Containerised workloads

The Laravel app and the Node.js video processing servers run in Docker on Amazon ECS with AWS Fargate, scaling with demand.

Aurora, built to fail over

Amazon Aurora with Multi-AZ, automated backups and read replicas, tuned with Performance Insights.

Zero-downtime releases

GitHub Actions builds, tests and deploys every change with ECS batch deployments.

Infrastructure as code

The whole environment, from ECS and the load balancer to Aurora, is defined in AWS CDK as modular stacks.

Built in

Security and visibility

Private subnets, AWS KMS encryption and AWS Secrets Manager protect the data. Amazon GuardDuty, AWS Security Hub, AWS WAF and AWS Shield guard the platform, and Amazon CloudWatch with Datadog keep it in view.

From commit to customer.

  • Shipped automatically. GitHub Actions builds each change and rolls it out to Amazon ECS with batch deployments, with no downtime.
  • Routed to healthy tasks. An Application Load Balancer spreads traffic across AWS Fargate tasks in several Availability Zones.
  • Scales with demand. ECS scaling rules add and remove tasks as load changes, and Fargate Spot runs work at lower cost.
  • Data that fails over. Amazon Aurora runs Multi-AZ with read replicas, and files sit in Amazon S3.
  • Watched and protected. Amazon CloudWatch and Datadog monitor it; Amazon GuardDuty, AWS Security Hub and AWS WAF guard it.

High-level architecture

Repurpose.io on AWS

How Repurpose.io runs on AWSHigh-level AWS architecture for Repurpose.io. Customers reach the platform through Amazon Route 53 and an Application Load Balancer, which sends traffic to healthy tasks of platform services on Amazon ECS with AWS Fargate, inside an Amazon VPC. The services use Amazon Aurora and Amazon S3, and send metrics and logs to Amazon CloudWatch. GitHub Actions builds each change and rolls it out with ECS batch deployments. Key results

More reliable, faster to ship, cheaper to run.

Availability

99.9%

Availability SLA

Tasks across Availability Zones and Multi-AZ Aurora keep the platform up, and failed tasks restart on their own.

Delivery

~60%

Faster deployments

The new CI/CD pipeline rolls changes out in batches, so releases are quicker and lower risk.

Cost

Up to 70%

Lower compute cost

Fargate Spot and right-sizing cut compute cost against On-Demand pricing.
